The County was named for Thomas West, Third Baron De La Warr and governor of the then English colony of Virginia. In 1609, Henry Hudson explored the area and early settlers were of Dutch, Swedish and English origin. Its first inhabitants, however, were the Lenni-Lenape Native American Indians.
