The City held the nation’s first radio broadcast at KDKA and many Industrialists had homes in Pittsburgh including the Rockefellers, Andrew Carnegie and George Westinghouse. It is also the birthplace of famed artist Andy Warhol and a museum in his honor sits in the city today.
Other famous people from Pittsburgh include actresses Shirley Jones and Demi Moore and actors Michael Keaton, Jeff Goldblum and Scott Glenn. Dennis Miller and famed dancer Gene Kelly also were born in Pittsburgh but perhaps its famous resident was Fred Rogers of PBS’ Mister Rogers Neighborhood television show.
Technological employers include Google, Apple and Intel and business like Nova Chemicals, FedEx and Bayer have home offices in the City. Pittsburgh is also a LEED “energy” City and houses the first 10 green structures built in the United States.
Beyond the University of Pittsburgh, other higher education facilities include Duquesne University, Robert Morris College and the Carnegie Mellon known for its advancements in technology.
Popular tourist attractions include Heinz Field, PNC Park, Consul Energy Center, the Pittsburgh City Light Opera House and Heinz Hall. Tourists are drawn to the area in the summer for the Three Rivers Arts Festival and the Regatta Festival—where contestants from all over the world race to win in “anything that floats.” Locals enjoy riverboat trips on the Gateway Clipper line and riding the Duquesne Incline to Mt. Washington. It is also home to the Carnegie Science Center, the Pittsburgh Zoo and Phipps Conservatory.
