3 Ways a Small Business can Quickly Kill their Facebook Fan Base

unlike facebook fansI find it amazing the number of free media and public relations outlets small businesses have at their fingertips today.  At the same time, I am also quite amazed at the number of small businesses who take advantage of this freedom, or are so accustomed to traditional outbound marketing, that they go about it completely wrong.

No secret here, at the top of the mountain of free media and public relations outlets is Facebook and their free fan pages.  With over 800 million members and still growing, Facebook is a fantastic way for a small business to brand itself and build a strong base of raving fans, that is unless they revert to bad habits, or "old media" tactics.

Here are 3 ways a small business will quickly kill their Facebook fan base if not careful.

1. Constant Self-Promotion.  Just because a fan likes your page doesn't mean they want to hear about how great you are 24/7.  Self promotion should be limited to no more than 20% of your updates.  It's about branding.  Posts don't need to be about your industry.  Post what your fan's might find interesting.  Remember it's about them....not you!

2. Being Anti-Social.  Remember that social media is just that...social.  Ask questions, look for feedback.  Respond to comments.  Comment on their posts.  Just posting a status update is not social enough.  Social as you know is about engagement.  Think about it this way.  Every time you engage fans in Facebook, you are branding.  If fans value your engagement, they will spread the gospel for you and grow your brand.

3. A Lack of Transparency.  People, or Facebook fans want truth and honesty.  If one makes a complaint on your fan page, the best thing you can do is show that you are human, and respond to the comment in a timely manor.  It's also okay to talk about the negative aspects of your industry.  Fan's will thank you for your transparency in "likes", "reshares", and sales!

With email marketing, it's all about the size of your list.  Facebook is no different.  Treat each with respect, engagement and transparency, and your small business shall enjoy all the fruits of your labor.
