Back In Black: Matte Black Car Wraps Are Today's Heavy Metal

cool dude who likes matte black wraps"Back in black, I hit the sack, I've been too long, I'm glad to be back"

Seems like only yesterday when I was head bangin' to that famous AC/DC track. The year was 1980 and colors were loud and proud, glossy white, pink, neon, I could go on and on! How I survived the 80's I'll never know. Fast forward to 2010, an era of economic uncertainty. Color is muted, the trend is towards more earthy tones. In the area of car color, particularly with exotic cars, muscle cars and souped up imports, the popular trend is matte black.

Black has always been a popular color in fashion, goes with almost anything, has a slimming effect, and is associated with looking "cool". Well matte black car wraps takes this effect one step further.  It just looks "word", or however you would describe sleek, refreshing, or composed.

Why would I wrap my car in matte black instead of having it repainted? The answer is two fold, cost and technology. Some estimates have repainting a car in matte black as 3-5 times the cost of wrapping.  That is why even owners of exotic sport cars are wrapping these days. If the car is leased, the owner can now have the look of matte, and have it safely, professionally removed before turning the vehicle in.  Even better, the paint job underneath is protected and kept looking brand new.

As for technology, the major car wrapping media providers such as Oracal have put good R&D into matte black cast vinyl.  The result is a 4 mil premium cast vinyl that comes wide enough to be able to avoid most seams on the vehicle.

The last piece to matte black wrapping is a quality installation.  All body moldings, trim, and other accessories should be removed from the vehicle prior to beginning the installation.  This will avoid paint lines showing in areas near the windows and headlights.

So today we're seeing all kinds of vehicles being retrofitted with matte black.  Everything from Mustangs to a Maseratis. So go on, bang your head, matte black is back!
