Golf Sponsorship Signs: Creating Exceptional Value for Sponsors
Pop Quiz:
Who has played in a Golf Tournament within the last year?
Do you remember three sponsors of the event?
What business were the sponsors in and what products were they offering?
If your golf tournament attendees cannot answer these questions, you most likely aren’t giving your sponsors a good value for their golf sponsorship. Don’t panic! We hear this all the time from sponsors who are actually purchasing their own signs instead of using the tournament organizers version. Hard to believe, right? Yet, they tell us for their $300 - $500, all they got was a little black and white sign next to the hole and they barely remember it themselves (especially if it was top shelf open bar after the round.)
Generally, they go on to say that while they believed in the cause they were sponsoring, they also hoped the tournament players, would remember their company name, logo or offerings in case their service was needed. Retailers hoped consumers might even stop by their store because they recognized the logo. How often do we remember a little black and white sign?
Sign Girl’s suggestion for these angst ridden sponsors has been simple: Purchase a full color or die cut sign that perfectly represents their business and logo. Be sure the sign mimics their current campaign, branding or sales and specials colors. In the middle of the night, wearing black, sneak onto the field and place your sign right next to your hole. Then wait quietly in the bushes with rotten tomatoes all day in case someone tries to take your sign down or replace it with the unidentifiable black on white version.
For all you organizers that aren’t tomato fans, here are my tips:
1. Offer sponsorship levels. Level one may be black and white. Level two a full color. Level three a die cut (golf ball shaped) with a full color logo.
2. Include a full color die cut sponsorship sign as a value added for the sponsor. Sell it with the package instead of the black and white. However, bump up the sponsorship cost just a little to cover the difference.
3. Make a deal with a preferred golf sponsorship sign company and provide
that person’s information to your sponsors. This is such a win win for the sign company, I bet they give you a great deal.
4. Make the signs ‘to go’ for each sponsor so they can prop them in windows or outside of stores – more good recognition.
5. Use the nicer, upscale signs as part of your marketing for next year. Consider putting a picture on the front of a card or sending out thank yous. We all know how hard it is to throw away something with our business logo on it, right? (That and pictures of the kids!)
One more thought. Sponsorship signage, er signs, are really not expensive when you consider the value they add to a sponsorship.
If you’re having a golf tournament in Philadelphia, New Jersey, Delaware, or any other place warm enough for 18 holes– ask me how you can add value to your sponsors and increase their return rate.
